Jere Gettle started Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company when he was 17 years old, with $100 and a tote bin full of heirloom seeds he had grown on his family’s homestead in the Missouri Ozarks. Today Baker Creek is North America’s largest heirloom seed company, offering about 1,000 varieties of heirloom seeds from around the world. Though the company has grown from a teenager’s hobby to a thriving global business, Jere’s passion for heirlooms, gardening, healthy eating, community, and self-sufficiency remains at the heart of the business and serves to inspire others.

Before the interview, Bevin shares his thoughts on a recent article in the winter edition of Edible Wow Magazine. On page 39, author Courtney Burk has written an amazing article on the many ways that we can enjoy eating squash… and not just the flesh of the fruit! Burk interviews a handful of farmers and chefs that share insights on eating squash flesh, skin and leaves. But what this article fails to mention is how easy it is to press a decadently delicious oil from the squash seeds!

You can find an Edible magazine for your region at https://www.ediblecommunities.com/

Learn more about how to press your own seed and nut oils at home with Bevin’s book The Complete Guide to Seed & Nut Oils. Its available on the Small House website and also on Amazon.
